Intro to Hospitality Case Study #1 Free Essays

Complete Case Study #1 Meat’s Impact Intro to Hospitality Management Professor: Warren Jahn November 18, 2012 From reading â€Å"Meats Impact†, it is important to note that eating less meat lowers heart disease, diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Also, by substituting eggs or fish for red meat and dairy one day of the week for one year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It states that people who eat more red meat than others have a 40% higher risk of dying of a heart attack, stroke, etc. We will write a custom essay sample on Intro to Hospitality Case Study #1 or any similar topic only for you Order Now For every kilogram of beef we eat, 27 kilograms of greenhouse gases are released into the environment (Meat’s Impact). This article points out specific things about eating red meat and how it impacts a person’s health. I do not believe that this article will persuade the restaurant industry to change because honestly, these are things that have to be decided by ourselves, no one can make the changes in our lives, only we can. It is hard to say that the restaurant industry would be to blame for me getting a heart attack because I decided to eat a lot of red meat in my life. They would be to blame if they forced me to order it or forced me to eat it, but it would be my decision and not theirs to eat and order red meat. This article is a good wake up call for those of us that do not feel as though eating red meat is a big deal to our health or the environment for that matter. It shows statistics of what happens when we make unhealthy choices and it explains how not only does it affect us (our bodies) but it affect everyone around us too, through the environment. It is a good read for everyone to know what they are putting into their bodies and for them to know the differences that they could make if they would not eat red meat. Other than that it is not a big threat to the restaurant industry because they are going to keep selling meat regardless of what this article says. It is a matter of personal preference not whether or not red meat should be sold at restaurants. If for some reason it would impact the restaurant industry it would be by not allowing them to sell red meat at their establishment. This would ensure that no one will order red meat and eat it, making the right decision and helping themselves and the environment in the long run. For some reason, it seems like it would illegal or unconstitutional to make the restaurant industry not sell red meat but there are other places that sell insects and people eat there and that’s fine. In my opinion, this is all a matter of personal preference and whether or not you are or want to be on a healthy streak or just plain out be healthy altogether. No one can or should try to make anyone do anything they do not want to do because more than likely it will be unsuccessful because there is no cooperation from the person. The issues raised by CSPI are justified just because they try to educate the public on their health and a lot of people are not educated in this topic and allow themselves to be taken advantage of when out eating by not knowing what they are putting in their bodies. It makes sense that they would want to keep everyone safe and allow them the chance to make their own decisions based on what they learn from them. It’s good for an organization to keep their eye out for the public and help them realize when something is not good for their health/well being. Granted, it should not be taken to the extreme of trying to force the restaurant industry into doing what they do because not everyone wants to live the healthy lifestyle. It would make sense if people would want them to mind their own business because it probably puts a damper on the restaurant business because of it. It probably slows their business down because of the some investigations and or researching that CSPI might do or would want to do. Overall, I think that they have a good idea of how the public should perceive the restaurant industry but they should also keep in mind that they cannot force people to do what they want them to do. The restaurant industry should also keep in mind that they should have to be forthcoming with what they put on their menu, like seeing the amount of calories for each plate or seeing what the ingredients are for some dishes. This way it would give CSPI a peace of mind and allow the customers to make educated decisions on their entrees. References 1. Kohrman, H, (2012). Meat’s Impact. Human Cloning Essay Summary Example For Students

Human Cloning Essay Summary To consider the cloning of another human being forces me to question the very concepts of right and wrong that make us all human. Until the birth of Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be successfully cloned, it was thought that the ability to clone an adult human was impossible or would only be possible somewhere in the distant future! But that has all changed with the birth of Dolly and the explosion of advances in the field of Embryology and genetic screening. These advances are leading the way forward for the cloning of an adult human, which brings up many new ethical and complicated questions that I feel must be addressed by the scientific community and the public, before these advances can reach there full potential. As with any scientific or technological advance, it brings around questions that I feel must be answered: Do the pros out weight the advantages, and more importantly; is it right? Will Human Cloning become a brave new step in fighting disease and improving the quality of life, or will it lead to dehumanisation and a new genetic underclass?People say and strongly believe that biologists are c loning human embryos only to see how far they can push the scientific barriers. However not all things are corrupt, I believe, as do the leaders of Great Britain, that it is possible that the reasons behind Human Cloning, Embryology and genetic screening may be legitimate. Cloning could help improve the life of future generations. Although I still prefer the idea of these scientists spending all this money and their effort on finding a cure for a disease that has or will affect many of us in one way or another: cancer! I still keep an open mind about this subject as most of the embryologists and biologists claim that they are doing this as they feel that they have a duty to the improvement of our society, or even perhaps a moral obligation. To this end the techniques have been offered to society as an option for the improvement of humanity. The human race is in the early stages of defining human cloning and what it means. The human race is defining it as a science as opposed to an a rt or religion, specifically a kind of science that is called Biotechnology. Biotechnology is the study into the design and manufacture of the human body. I believe that we must all ask ourselves what this mean. Should it be allowed and is it right? A Time Magazine poll (March 10th, 1997) reported that 74% of those asked believe that it is against Gods will to clone humans. However, thinking that cloning humans is playing God is not actually true as no one can actually prove what Gods intentions were when crating the earth and the creatures on it? There is substantial disagreement as to what God s will is, but what I find interesting in this argument is something I read in an article Cloning: Will They Soon Clone Human Beings? by Garner Ted Armstrong who wrote: Anyone who has truly proved God exists; that God isnt only Creator, but Life giver, Designer, Sustainers, and Ruler over all his creation, knows that the human family began with one man, and that a wife, miraculously created form his own body and as unique and original a creation as Adam himself, formed the first family. Though Gods miraculous creation of Eve was far from cloni ng, it is interesting to note in passing that Gods own Word says He used Adams rib-physical bone and tissue to create Eve.This shows, to me, that God had to clone Adam to create Eves body structure, which could be argued that is what biologists and embryologists are only doing following in Gods foot steps and not playing God. .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .postImageUrl , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:hover , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:visited , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:active { border:0!important; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:active , .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485 .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2524478a28b668da45af875592747485:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hamlet Faking Madness EssayI firmly believe, after taking all this information in and weighting the positive and negative aspects of human cloning, that it is a decision of difficulty. Human cloning and cloning research shouldnt be made illegal because it may provide a cure for cancer, it probably will provide a valuable basic research and possible spin off technologies related to reproduction, development, and cures for deadly diseases, and finally prohibiting it would violate the fundamental freedom of scientific inquiry and for the human species to advance. Which would only cause controversy and confusion of what is really at stake. Yes sure it is good as it leads on fo r new developments and helps improve human life. As always there are the negative aspects: with genetic engineering and human cloning it is possible to use these in the arsenal of ethnic cleansing creating inequality in our society which would be the beginning of many wars, and thats some thing that the scientits, biologists and embryologists, as well me, dont want to see. All I can say is is it right? I say yes, but that is not for me to decide that is up to the individual.

Marriott and Hyatt

Marriott and Hyatt are leading brands in the world hospitality market. Hyatt Corporation operates in more than 45 countries, having over 370 locations, whereas Marriott operates in 68 countries having over 3150 properties.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Marriott and Hyatt specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Hyatt employs about 100 000 people, and Marriott has about 150 000 employees. Apparently, Marriot has a larger network, but it is necessary to add that this corporation is to great extent aimed at the US market. Conversely, Hyatt can be regarded as international brand. These two corporations also have different focuses. Hyatt is mainly aimed at premium market, whereas Marriot also offers various low-price options. Thus, Hyatt specializes in high end sectors and resorts, business plans, and family centers. At the same time Marriott offers more varied services, focusing on such business segments in the hotel chai n as: full service and lodging, select service and lodging, extended stay and lodging, timeshare, and even synthetic fuel. It is necessary to add that in contrast to Hyatt, Marriot has acquired other hotel brands (e.g. Ritz Carlton Hotel Corporation) diversifying its business. These two hospitality giants not only maintain constant high quality if their services but follow ethical standards and reveal social responsibility. Thus, Hyatt is preoccupied with environmental issues. The company launches various trainings for the employees to increase their awareness of what can be and should be done to solve environmental issues. Hyatt also has HyattEarth website where they monitor energy use reductions, reductions of Greenhouse Gas emissions, water use and landfill waste reductions. At the same time, Marriott is more concerned with contributing to the development of social responsibility among people. Thus, Marriott is very deliberate while choosing their partners paying much attention t o the quality of products they provide and their being socially responsible. For instance, Marriott demands very high quality of products and the use of environmentally friendly raw materials; they also check whether all human rights are followed in the hotels of the corporations or in companies-partners.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More It is important to point out that such social responsibility of the companies contributes to their respectful names. However, it should be mentioned that while Marriott has a really strong image of one-off hospitality corporation maintaining high quality standards, Hyatt had several scandals which damaged the company’s reputation. Thus, Hyatt has been often accused of employee mistreatment, workforce reduction and housecleaning personnel outsourcing. SWOT analysis Marriott Hyatt Strengths Wide range of brands Strategic locatio ns Brand image Website and social networking in Conducting its business Successful strategies to attract and Retain a pool of staff Premium offering Brand image Hyatt casino Weaknesses Focus on the United States market instead of global markets; Over-reliance on luxury products; Mostly targeted by terrorists and extremists High-level exposure to the premium market Diluted brand name Financial pressures Opportunities Emerging Asian Travel and Tourism markets Come up with low-end brands Distinction amongst hotel services offered; Decreased cost of real estate in the United States Eco-tourism Specialist businesses Hyatt business services Road trips Threats Timeshare is decreasing on popularity Economic meltdown, which lowered consumer’s spending power Threat from terrorists and extremists Tight United States borders Low cost travel/leisure Market heavily influenced by competitors Strengths Hyatt has a strong image and it is focused on premi um segments, and benefits from its additional option: casino. However, Marriott has more strong points: it has more diversified business, it possesses strategic locations and benefits from using technology to provide more services. Moreover, Marriot, in contrast to Hyatt, has very positive and unblemished reputation. Weaknesses Hyatt’s major downsides are its focus on premier segment where demand is declining due to world financial crises and diluted brand name. Conversely, Marriott which has quite diversified business suggests different options in all segments but it is mainly focused on the market within the United States without developing new opportunities on new markets (e.g. very promising Asian market). One of Marriott’s weaknesses is its frequent exposure to terrorist attacks. Opportunities Nevertheless, the both companies have many opportunities to develop. Thus, Hyatt can develop its specialist business segment, offering more services in holiday and leisure i ndustries. Moreover, the company can benefit from its road trips services due to the rise of air travel costs. At the same time Marriott should pay more attention to developing new markets, especially in Asia. The company should also consider providing more low-end brands which is quite possible due to the decreased costs in the US real estate.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Marriott and Hyatt specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Threats However, the companies should also take into account possible threats. Thus, Hyatt can face difficulties due to the increased offer of travel services where demand is becoming lower than offer. Hyatt can also lose its position in the segment of gambling since many new companies emerge. As far as Marriott is concerned it is necessary to point out the following threats: financial crisis consumers lowered consumers’ spending power. Besides, Marriott can lose its leading positi on if it stays within the boundaries of the US. In summary, Marriot and Hyatt are two giants of hospitality market. However, it is necessary to point out that Marriot has larger services chain and strong reputation whereas Hyatt is not presented in so many countries and has had many scandals concerning employee mistreatment. Apart from this Hyatt is potentially more vulnerable to financial hardships since it is aimed at premier segment whereas Marriot should pay much attention to implementing innovations. This report on Marriott and Hyatt was written and submitted by user Uriah R. to help you with your own studies. US Presidency essays

US Presidency essays There can be little question in the modern scholars mind that the most prominent and influential figure in contemporary international politics is the president of United States. While this institution is famous for drawing an enormous amount of power from the U.S. Constitution, history has often shown that sources of presidential power are not limited to the parameters stated therein. There have been many instances in American history where the presidents popularity in politics and in the publics eyes have proved to be very significant factors in determining the political power he possesses. A great example can be found in the recent Clinton Administration. Towards the end of his second term in office, President Bill Clinton became, paradoxically, the most publicly shamed president of modern time and at the same time one of the most popular. Examining the events that unfolded, starting with the revelation of the Monica Lewinsky scandal up until President Clintons last weeks in the of fice, shows that public support can be an extremely significant part of the presidency. From the first months he took office, up until January of 1998, a series of economic and political victories had provided President Clinton with a remarkably high job approval rating (about 60 percent according to an ABC News/ Washington Post poll) from the public. When the story broke on Wednesday, January 21 of that year, public opinion polls conducted by credited news organizations showed that during the period between 22nd and 30th of January President Clintons rating fell to a record low. However as the weeks passed, the charismatic and intelligent public speaker successfully persuaded a remarkable percentage of the population to support him. Throughout the rest of the year, the public was faced with the fact that the President did indeed have a sexual relationship with a young White House intern, and t ...

Career Path for Acounting Essay Example for Free

Career Path for Acounting Essay It is always so hard to give the exact number of people who have majored in accounting, but one thing that I know is that the demography is very wide and large. This is because they have different reasons for majoring in this career path. The most common reason to all people is because accounting is a marketable career and they merely want to find a job. The number of people majoring in this field is growing immensely and the most important thing is to consider the main reason of joining this profession. Some people will claim that when they were in high school, this was their best subject and they loved it and so they will need to major in it. I believe the best reason for majoring in accounting is because it has wide varieties of career path that one can major in. People should understand that this field is not all about debits and credits. It is more of a communicating language in the world of business and this is why many chief executive officers hold a degree in this field. In the day today life it is usually one of the most common undergraduate degree programs. The most important thing is to make certain that all of the people who are in this profession understand business and that is why many people who have ventured in accounting always have considerations for such posts. The most interesting part of this career choice is that most of the time the people who venture into it will always have the best job positions waiting for them because many people always have a notion that it is a difficult discipline. The employment opportunities are abounding for the graduates majoring in accounting. The government figures shows that at least 1.2 million of jobs are held by accountants every year. According to the Feldmann, 2009 and also the survey done by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA, 2000) the graduates are declining but after revisiting their research in the year 2005, it reflected an increase in number of the accountant graduates. This has become a relief to many accounting recruiters. According to the 2007 Employment dynamics and growth expectations (EDGE) 57% of the hiring managers have a difficulty when hiring qualified staff. This call for a necessity of accounting graduates, which fortunately is increasing day after the other as the business enterprises increase. After attaining a degree in this sector, most of the students always opt to become public accountants as the first career choice. The choice of either taking job as a private accountant depended on the fact that they had to make choices among the salary values offered to them. None of them like to work in the non profit organizations. They also venture to work in a CPA company because this will give them an opportunity to venture in areas that they want to experience especially in the write up sector and auditing. This will offer them the necessary experience and that is one of the things that have invigorated so many students in venturing in the public sector option. One may also opt to venture in the private sector which is immensely lucrative. Some of the student will always like to work for the company which is rising up in this sector, but this will be determined by the level of research one is willing to do. This will give them a chance to grow and nurture their career paths in different sectors. I would advise the graduates to incline towards the public sector especially the government and non profitable sector which will provide them with the best job security even if the salary is low. There are several things that an accountant can do after they have completed their undergraduate degree. One can choose to specialize in different areas of this field, but most of all have the kind of skills that can enable them in doing so. One of the areas that is very common for people who have done accounting. Auditing is one of the areas that one can venture in. It is one of the basic areas that people have chosen to build their careers in. This kind of job involves checking of ledgers and financial statements for an organization so as to determine if they are making losses and are they spending the cash that has been allocated to them accordingly. In the era that we are in today, the work of this nature has been automated and mostly they just need to key in the values accordingly and they are going to get the right kind of statement. They ensure that the values that are presented are for the financial year contains the right values. Accounting career paths are very varied and this is why many a times one has to consider the path that they want take. Many people after they have cleared school do not have an impression where to flinch their careers but the many options have in these career paths that can be taken. Book keeping is another thing that they can do. These are the people who keep records of invoices, payments and other revenue coming for a company or an individual. In many cases they will always want to venture in this area accordingly. Another area, which they would venture in is becoming general accountants. This is almost the same to a book keeper, but they make accruals and the necessary adjustments in the accounting records. In the large organizations, they are usually placed in departments like human resources department dealing with the payment of the staff. Another area is when one becomes a controller. These are the people who are responsible for the accounting department. They usually work in the public sector but also venture in the private sector and they are usually in charge of cash flow for the organization. For one to reach to such a position, one must work and put a lot of determination in the work that they do. The other job, which is available for them is becoming a forensic accountant. These are the people who work with the government or the persons who are accountable for auditing and investigating crimes which are related to accounting frauds and other related things. These people should ensure that they posses some level of law knowledge because this will assist them in identifying areas which have been altered and assist in prosecution of the culprits. A budget analyst is another thing that they can do. This is because they are able to interpret many things, which are recorded in the budget. This is a very crucial and involving work because they are the people who are responsible in the making of financial plans for businesses and other organizations especially the government agencies and other non profitable organizations. The professionals who have taken up these works can take up these jobs in both the private and the public sectors. The people who take these kinds of jobs should be very innovative when it comes to the negotiation process and that is why they should have good personal and interpersonal skills. Financial accounting is another sector that one can venture in. These are the persons who are accountable for the preparation of financial statements of the available businesses or any enterprise. These are the persons who are used to make decisions when there is a merger which is going to take place in any company. This is because these people Are gifted to study the fiscal statements of the two companies and determine if there is a need for merger and if one of the companies is taking advantage of the other or not. They are also responsible for forecasting to determine the returns that will be experienced by the companies when they merge. It is important to make sure that these people are responsible for the financial and accounting processes. Management accounting is a very busy position in any organization. This is why many people are able to have the kind of decisions that are deterministic in the process of capital budgeting and the area of analysis of contracts. Control on businesses on the expenses and the cost analysis is done by these people. They usually make sure that they work in close contact with the people responsible for the marketing sector since they assist in a big way when it comes to the making decisions which are good for the welfare of the company. Taxation is another area which they can take up. This is for persons who would like to become tax accountants. These are the people who work for both companies and individuals. They usually prepare statements which either for a corporation of personal income. It is a boost for the individual who is doing this kind of work to have good knowledge background of the necessary kind of economics which is being used by these people. Accountants are also responsible for advising individuals when it comes to venturing in different kinds of businesses. This is because they are the people who have the knowhow on the issues that are present and current in the business world. It is very good to ensure that the people who need services can be given independent and privately. Budgeting and other issues, which are associated with the business are given and offered to the people accordingly. This is very usual for the companies which need a lot of desecrate business especially those that are being faces with of competition. They need individuals who are trustworthy and can be able to keep a secret and the customer’s information private. Some individuals have also opted to continue with their studies even after becoming qualified accountants. They continue for MS to become licensed, Certified Public Accountants. This is a person who is approved by the state to finance financial information in the public companies to give accurate results. These are the individuals qualified to start their own auditing firms if they do not a favouring or well paying job opportunity (Felix 2010, 56). Thus the study found it advisable for the accountant graduates to continue to this level for better and higher chances of employment opportunities and also private or self employment enterprises. The study realized various career choices coincide with the accountant career path. Though the rate of accountant graduate seems to increase year after the other, the job opportunities are also increasing since many people are venturing to businesses which requires accountants to deal with the financial analysis. Each and every sector starting with the individual enterprises, the public, private and nongovernmental organizations cannot be successful without the accountants. These are important personnel since every business is after making profits and thus accounting careers like the auditing department are important to examine whether the business profitable or not. The private and public sectors also requires accountant staffs that are qualified to analyze their financial status and thus, realizing on the areas that needs improvement. Some students lack the opportunity of joining any of the discussed careers especially because of some issues like corruption and high competition. Nevertheless such students are not supposed to be frustrated but to come up with other activities that utilize their qualifications. A number of graduates who have lacked a position in the public, private, or the non profit organizations have started their own auditing firms. They run their own business as private auditors and are employed casually by these organizations. Other graduates have set their small microfinance businesses. These are industries which are growing at a high rate. For the qualified accountants their operations are easy and beneficial. These enterprises have become common in the rural areas and in areas with small scale business. Some of the accountants are joining hands to operate such businesses as partners. Some of these enterprises have grown to become Sacco’s and eventually banks. continue for MS to become licensed, Certified Public Accountants. This is an individual who is licensed by the state to finance financial information in the public companie s to give accurate results. These are the individuals qualified to start their own auditing firms if they do not a favouring or well paying job opportunity (Felix 2010, 56). Thus the study found it advisable for the accountant graduates to continue to this level for better and higher chances of employment opportunities and also private or self employment enterprises. For people who have advanced in these areas and actually had the best payment package compared to having a degree alone. This is why I would advice many people to make sure that they have taken the issue of taking CPA in an extra way to be able to make more money and have better jobs. Many people who have licences and certifications are able to have the best things in the career paths toward getting the best jobs possible. Every qualified accountant expects a salary that is higher than for any other undergraduate from a number of business schools. There is also an expectation of initiation into an exclusive professional club of the practicing accountants. This is a symbolic status that makes one feel to have an important and recognized rank in the society. Unfortunately these expectations are rarely met in the current society. Quite a number of students have joined the account career. This is making this field to have more than the required participants. In other words the supply is overtaking the demand. With high expectations of having a unique status, what happens when one fails to achieve this goal? One is also interested with the queries like where an accountant career path can lead one to or if there are there other industrial areas related to accountant career that such a graduate could get involved to utilize his knowledge. For students who are clearing from the universities i would advise that one who is trying to learn about a good accounting career path should have a wide variety of choices especially if he has a degree in accounting. One’s initial selection depends on the feeling about a primary direction that he believes is of interest to him. There are various general areas where one can choose to work in for instance private, public, government linked, or the non profit making organizations. For newer graduates, it is advisable to work with a CPA firm since it gives an opportunity to examine a number of industries and experience of both the audit and write up functions. One may also decide to join a private sector which is more beneficial, nevertheless it is advisable to first investigate on any industry that lies as a choice and go for the one that is fast growing. This gives an opportunity for expansion of ones career and thus wider rooms for advancement. Where one is inclined in a public service or a career in a government or non profit making organizations, one gets a good chance of exploring in various issues and can easily make changes which are beneficial to a the whole society or even the nation. All the government offices, in all departments, require accountant personnel that are talented. These offices include the FDIC, IRS, Comptroller of the currency, General services administration, military branches departments, health ministries, environmental ministries, to mention but a few. Any accounting working area, be it in government, public, or private sectors, will always lead to an interesting financial rewarding and beneficial careers. Though some of these careers overlap they vary in focus and lead to a challenging, professional life. In conclusion I would say that Accounting is a career that moulds accountants; these are persons that are responsible in the provision of data that is mainly required to make an assessment on the future and current economic activities. Accountants performs various duties, which include planning tax strategy, calculating the computing cost, preparation of financial statements, developing information technology, measuring financial performance, to mention but a few. This suggests that there are various and different accounting career paths which are beneficial in one way or another and can fit different people. Though some of them overlap, each of them has a specific focus. For successful career people should be able to do the best that they can do to advance this sector. Many technological advances have been made to ensure that these people who take up this course are able to save time and actually do their work better too. Career Path for Acounting. (2016, Dec 24).

TIME MANAGEMENT Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

TIME MANAGEMENT - Research Paper Example There are no specific ways of managing time as it keeps on varying from one person to another. Hence, it is advisable that before one settles down for a specific guideline, it is advisable that a person works on numerous alternatives to achieve the best. Factors to Consider for Success in DBA Program In order to become a successful online student, a number of considerations and planning must be put in place and consider that a person has to allocate some time for his family, and leisure. DBA program is an online learning program that is totally different from traditional classrooms where students meet with their tutor for physical class interactions. Apparently, lack of class meeting, gives a student freedom to make his or her own decision on whether to participate or not. This makes a provision of flexibility, but restricts him or her to set aside time for personal studies. Unlike in a traditional class, most of the teaching is done through online moderation and notes are dispatched through websites. It is advised that the students should take their time to access and read these notes. In addition, a student should successfully go through technical orientation as a full orientation that exposes a student to technical use of the system. This enables the students to gain competency and skills of going through the software before the course actually commences. In turn, this minimizes the time that could have been spent in learning how to maneuver through the system during the course of training. Of importance to note is that, having a competency in the system enables the student to concentrate entirely on studies. Understanding the course outline and accessing course outline before the semester begins enable the student to get familiarized with the topics to be covered during that session (Rogers, 2009). Also, it is good to understand that most of the sites share similarities in the outline but the topic vary from one unit to the other. Students are expected to r ead and understand the syllabus and the concepts of what they are about to study. This enables them to depict the prediction of their expectations. Management and keeping up to date with time enables an individual to prioritize on course work (Allen, 2005). This should be followed by logging into the system at some specific hours at least every day. It is advisable to make a choice of such time when the mind is fresh as it enables defined study structure, and motivates towards achievement of goals. Pros and Cons of Online Learning Online education is considered convenient in the sense that, it can be effectively moderated beyond geographical boundaries (Inoue, 2007). Students do not have to attend lecture session as in traditional classes but can attend to a virtual class at definite location. It also offers new possibilities for learning with regard to presentation of information. However, it is limited to technological accessibility (Rogers, 2009). Affordable in terms of cost, a s tudent can attend a class session without incorporation of travel expenses (Bourne, 2003). Besides, it allows the student to work while still studying, over and above, allowing for technological expansion. Since most of the studies are done through the use of computers, students have the experience of additional

Portfolio Diversification Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Portfolio Diversification - Essay Example client of Bill Guru’s and was â€Å"very happy† with Bill’s advice and professionalism, in helping here rebalance and reallocate her portfolio that resulted in its increasing value over the years without much volatility. Bill wanted to diversify her portfolio and reduce its beta, thereby minimising the risk inherent in her portfolio. The case presumes that the individual betas of the 5 stocks are greater than the market index beta of 1. It is the task of Bill Guru to explain to Mrs. Jones what diversification meant and what the advantages were of having a diversified portfolio. He also needed to explain why at her stage in life she would need her portfolio to be rebalanced and her assets reallocated to meet her needs both for capital appreciation and for steady income. At the same time, Bill would have to discuss with Mrs. Jones the possibility of putting part or all of her assets in other forms of investments such as money market funds or fixed income securities such as Treasury bills or Treasury bonds. The possibility of transferring all of her investments to fixed income securities would preclude the question of a beta coefficient as the latter applies only to stocks in relation to the main market index such as the FTSE. On the other hand, if a significant part of her assets continues to be invested in stocks, the beta would be a relevant concept. He will need to explain the impact of the overall market on her stock portfolio as the market is subject to systematic risks. Also he has to explain that there are factors that affect a particular stock and a particular industry, factors that are unique or specific to the stock in question. The rebalancing of Mrs. Jones’ portfolio may take any form that is tailored to the particular situation and needs. Some kind of distribution among different types of securities would have to be discussed with her that would take into account the need for steady income in the form of interest and dividends as well as

Women In The 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries :: Expository Essays Research Papers

Women In The 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries In the 17th century rich women would normally be taught at home by a tutor, they were taught subjects like Latin, French, Needlework, and how to converse, and they were also taught how to look pretty and to play instruments like the piano. When they were older there parents would decide who they were going to marry and the family of the women would pay a dowry to the parents of the husband. They only got married to get more popular and look more important, if the wives husband thought the wives got annoying the husband would put a scolds bridle on her head. If the husband wanted to get divorced the husband could just take the wife to market. A rich women wouldn't normally get a job, they would just stay at home and look after the family and tell the servants what to do. Poor women did not go to school or have an education, they just looked after their home, and span cotton or worked in fields. Diesel Marketing Mix Essay

Introduction This essay on Marketing mix is worth 30% of my Marketing module, I am going to construct a report to analyze the marketing mix of a company. The company that I chose to do is Diesel, They are an international clothing company ranging from women’s wear, men’s wear to accessories, and I am going to look at Product, Price, Place and Promotion While doing this project I am going to research the Diesel company using the Internet, I am going to look at websites such as www.diesel.com, www.wikipedia.com and any other sites I come across that will help me with information on the company. I will then construct the essay using Google docs and Microsoft word. Company background Beginning as a company focused on making quality clothing, Diesel has become part of the youth culture worldwide. Diesel is an innovative international design company, producing a wide-ranging collection of jeans, clothing and accessories. Diesel is a leader in pioneering new styles, fabrics, manufacturing methods and quality control to guarantee an outstanding product. The company is present in over 80 countries with over 5,000 points of sale and more than 300 monobrand stores (200 of which are company-owned and the rest in partnership with local distributors). When Renzo Rosso founded the company in 1978, he wanted it to be a leader, a company that  took chances and carved out a niche for itself in its field. He surrounded himself with creative, talented people – innovators who, like him, rejected the slavish trend following typical of the fashion industry. He wanted to create the most dynamic and imaginative product available anywhere: he gave his open minded design team broad stylistic freedom, and their mission was to create an apparel line perfect for independent people who follow their own unique path in life and for those style-makers who express their individuality by the way they dress. From the very beginning, Diesel’s design team, headed by Creative Director Wilbert Das, turned their backs on the style-dictators and consumer forecasters of the fashion establishment and let their own personal tastes lead them. The company views the world as a single, border-less macro-culture, and the Diesel staff reflects this: a cosmopolitan team that creates an unpredictable, dynamic vitality and energy within the company. Diesel â€Å"people† and their working methods are so unconventional, albeit productive, that they have been profiled in countless media, and have been studied by international consulting organizations and un iversities. www.diesel.com Marketing mix The Marketing Mix is one of the most famous business tools in marketing. The Marketing mix has four elements called the four Ps which are Product, Price, Place and Promotion and is often crucial when determining a product or brand’s unique selling point Some commentators will increase the marketing mix to the ‘five Ps’, to include people. Others will increase the mix to ‘Seven Ps’, to include physical evidence (such as uniforms, facilities, or livery) and process (i.e. the whole customer experience eg a visit to Disney World). The term â€Å"marketing mix† was coined in 1953 by Neil Borden in his American Marketing Association presidential address. However, this was actually a reformulation of an earlier idea by his associate, James Culliton, who in 1948 described the role of the marketing manager as a â€Å"mixer of ingredients†. The term became popular in the article written by Neil Borden called â€Å"The Concept of the Marketing Mix .† He started teaching  the term after he learned about it with an associate Product Since 1575, the word â€Å"product† has referred to anything produced since 1695; the word has referred to â€Å"thing or things produced†. In marketing, a product is anything that can be offered to a market that might satisfy a want or need. This includes physical objects, services, people, places, organizations and ideas. Products should meet the needs of the market Products have 4 levels: 1. Core level 2. Actual 3. Augmented product level 4. Potential product level Product Classification I would put the brand Diesel under the product classification Durable Goods. Diesel Goods are a bit more expensive than other brands but are designed to last longer. Product life cycle The stages that products go through from development to withdrawal from the market. Stages in the Product Life Cycle Products tend to go through five stages: 1. New product development stage 2. Market introduction stage 3. Growth stage 4. Mature stage 5. Decline or Stability stage I would say most of the collections at Diesel are at the growth or Maturity Stage They are always trying to keep on top and introduce new lines often. Diesel Introduced the line Black and Gold in February 2008 at new York fashion week Since the brand comes from Italy, the owners thought that a great extension for a clothing brand would be wine. The problem is that wine drinkers are very particular about the wine that they drink, and many wine enthusiasts look skeptically at a clothing company releasing its own brand of wine. The wine could be the best in the world, but because of the label attached to it and the feeling that anything but a world-class winery will do, it is doomed to fail. While an Italian company going into wine is not that out of the ordinary, a clothing company starting to sell liquor is. Deisel also wanted to break into formal wear to be on par with the likes of Ralph Lauren but after years of being a casual durable brand formal wear just didn’t kick off. http://faculty.insead.edu/chandon/personal_page/Documents/Case_Diesel%202007_corrected-w.pdf Branding Definition: The marketing practice of creating a name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products Branding is the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in  the consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers. Before the introduction of StyleLab in 1998, the brand portfolio of Diesel SpA consisted of three main product lines: D-Diesel (including licenses), Diesel Kids and 55DSL (The brands and some of their logos are shown in Exhibit 6). Most of its production was outsourced to small and medium-sized companies, whereas design and marketing remained in-house. Brand Identity Diesel’s management team emphasized that D-Diesel and StyleLab should have distinct brand identities but with some common roots. Both brands shared values such as freedom, global outlook, creativity and thoughtfulness. Nevertheless, whereas D-Diesel stood for irony and irreverence, StyleLab stood for sophistication and mystery. Of course, the products themselves were quite different: Diesel focusing on denim while StyleLab experimented with a variety of innovative fabrics. Packaging Diesel Keep their packaging simple enough, for their clothes they are wrapped in a clear plastic bag with the word deisel in Black written on it, and then they are put into a mostly white parer bag with again the brand written in Black Block letters, For Deisel fragrances they are always very well packaged in a nice box and always have some kind of accessories free with them, usually attached to the bottle (like seen below in the image) .Usually their wallets and other sunglasses are packaged in a cream coloured box, With Diesel Logo written in light Brown on the box, with tissue paper inside. Their products always have a brown cardboard tag attached. Price Definition of Price Pricing is an integral part of a marketing strategy as it is the only one of the 4 P’s that generates revenue for the firm. Price is commonly used as a strategic weapon between competitors and plays an important role in shaping  customers perceptions of the products value and quality. Pricing will be determined by other elements in the marketing mix Price should be consistent with other elements. Diesel uses premium pricing because the price needs to reflect the value of the lifestyle experience of the brand. The people at Diesel are in tune with that lifestyle and promote what Diesel represents. Pricing Strategies Pricing strategy refers to method companies use to price their products or services. Almost all companies, large or small, base the price of their products and services on production, labor and advertising expenses and then add on a certain percentage so they can make a profit. There are several different pricing strategies, such as penetration pricing, price skimming, discount pricing, product life cycle pricing and even competitive pricing. Diesel uses a model based on premium pricing. You do not pay a premium price for Diesel jeans because they are a premium quality, that is taken for granted, You pay a premium price because the jeans and the brand fit in with and even encourage a premium, dynamic lifestyle built â€Å"for successful living†, as Diesel would say. This allows the company to price those products in a way which complements and neatly fits into that lifestyle. A strategy such as penetration pricing used by businesses making high-volume, relatively low-margin products would be inappropriate as it would undermine the quality association thus devaluing the brand and experience. From researching the price discrepancies of the Diesel brand I have found a few differences in pricing online, Firstly I looked at the Diesel online shopping website www.store.diesel.com and then compared the prices to other online sites that sell Diesel clothing, such as www.mandmdirect.com and www.asos.com . The first difference I found was at asos.com they were selling a Mens Diesel T-shirt for â‚ ¬55.00, the exact same T-shirt was on sale at the Diesel website for â‚ ¬60.00 making it â‚ ¬5 more expensive. The second website I looked at was mandmdirect.com, here I found huge differences in price as you can see from my print screens below, the same Mens T-shirt was selling for â‚ ¬45.00 at the diesel website and â‚ ¬24.99 on the mandmdirect.com, making the T-shirt â‚ ¬20 cheaper at mandmdirect.com. I also looked at womens clothes on mandmdirect.com and found the same jeans for â‚ ¬34.99 on mandm and sellinf for â‚ ¬135.00 at Diesel, thus making the jeans â‚ ¬100 less at mandmdirect.com. Also I tool a look at some americian websites(www.blufly.com & www.revolveclothing.com ) to determine weather it is cheaper to buy Diesel Jeans in the usa and by using the currency  converter on goolge, it appears that there would be no difference in the price of a pair of Diesel jeans here or abroad. â‚ ¬55 asos â‚ ¬60 diesel.com Pricing Methods I think Diesel would use perceived value pricing which means They price their items based on the Perception of the buyer of value. Competition from other brands such as levis my affect the way Diesel price their items. As you can see from the section price in comparison to competitors most of Levis garments are cheaper than Diesels. Place Definition of Place * Decisions about where to sell the product * Or concerns about where the customers are, and how to get to them * Also includes the â€Å"channel of distribution† – meaning, all the different middlemen you use to get the product out to the customer Channels of distribution Indirect and direct Number 1 is a direct channel of distribution as the product would be going straight from the manufacture to the consumer. 2,3 and 4 are all indirect. Ever since the beginning, Renzo Rosso believed in addressing the world with one product and one language, and one of his first steps was building a solid and vast distribution platform stretching across all 5 continents. Most of Diesel’s current production is outsourced, to small and medium-sized companies. Production of denim jeans is based exclusively in Italy. All international logistics operations (wholesale and retail) are centrally managed and carefully controlled. Intermediaries Often Diesel would work with different intermediaries for example they would use agents to help when sourcing different suppliers and advertising also Diesel might use overseas offices. However these can be very expensive to the company so Diesel would also look at new lower risk methods of market entry. Physical distribution Diesels approach to distribution can be seen as a mix of exclusive and selective distribution over intensive distribution. Exclusive distribution involves limiting distribution to single outlets such as the Diesel flagship stores. Selective distribution involves using a small number of retail outlets and partners to maintain the quality of presentation and communication to the customer. Intensive distribution, on the other hand, is commonly used to distribute low price or impulse goods such as sweets. When distributing their goods Diesel would have to think about warehousing, transport, packaging, Stock / inventory levels and customer service. Promotion Definition of promotion The publicisation of a product, organization, or venture so as to increase sales or public awareness it refers to the different promotional options available to the marketer such as: Brand advertising Co-operative advertising Corporate advertising Steps in the marketing communication process 1. Identification of target audience 2. Determine of communication objectives 3. Design of message 4. Selection of communication channel 5. Setting and allocation of communication budget 6. Selection of promotional mix Evaluation of results Identification of target customer * Stylistic men and women: ages of 20-35 years * Independent entrepreneur or innovator who follows their own unique path in life * This eccentric man or women is largely unaffected by fashion fads and spends a significant amount of money on quality fashion- forward clothing Communication objectives * Quality * Edgy * Unique * Eccentric Design of message Diesel Advertisements are always Edgy, stylish and sometimes controversial, they continually develop searing hot ad campaigns and innovative editorials. They have recently started a new campaign called â€Å"be stupid† The tagline ‘Be Stupid’ declares Diesel’s new philosophy that it’s way more interesting to be stupid and gave fun than be smart and live a boring life. It encourages people to take risks and move beyond the smart and sensible track for life. The campaign, developed at global advertising agency Anomaly, includes online, press and outdoor advertisements featuring â€Å"stupid† acts, a digital recruitment campaign for the Diesel music video/2010 catalogue, and viral  activity outlining the company’s Stupid philosophy. Diesel Stupid Philosophy Like balloons, we are filled with hopes and dreams. But. Over time a single sentence creeps into our lives. Don’t be stupid. It’s the crusher of possibility. It’s the world’s greatest deflator. The world is full of smart people. Doing all kind of smart things†¦ That’s smart. Well, we’re with stupid. Stupid is the relentless pursuit of a regret free life. Smart may have the brains†¦ but stupid has the balls. The smart might recognize things for how they are. The stupid see things for how they could be. Smart critiques. Stupid creates. The fact is if we didn’t have stupid thoughts we have no interesting thoughts at all. Smart may have the plans†¦ but stupid has the stories. Smart may have the authority but stupid has one hell of a hangover. It’s not smart to take risks†¦ It’s stupid. To be stupid is to be brave. The stupid isn’t afraid to fail. The stupid know there are worse things than failure†¦ like not even trying. Smart had one good idea, and that idea was stupid. You can’t outsmart stupid. So don’t even try. Remember only stupid can be truly brilliant. So, BE STUPID www.diesel.com Selection of communication channel Diesel would Use non-personal channels including Mass Media = national press, radio, TV, etc and Local Media = local press, trade or specialist publications. Setting and allocation of communication budget Three basic choices here: The affordable approach After the firm has paid its expenses then decide what you can afford The objective and task approach Determine what needs to be done (objectives) and allocate resources appropriately The percentage-of-sales method From January to September 2008, Diesel spent $5.8 million on U.S. advertising, according to TNS Media Intelligence You spend a percentage of your annual sales on communications I think Diesel would use the â€Å"The Objective and task approach† as their communication channel of choice. Selection of promotional mix This refers to the different promotional options available to the marketer, There are five elements in the Promotional Mix: * Advertising, * sales promotions, * personal selling, * public relations * sponsorship All elements of Diesel’s promotion aim to engage the customer with the lifestyle. If they like the lifestyle, they might like the products. For example, the Diesel team saw music as an inseparable part of that lifestyle and realised that exploring new music and new artists was all part of trying something different and experimenting with the unusual. 10 years later, Diesel:U:Music is a global music support collaborative, giving unsigned bands a place where they can be heard and an opportunity to have their talent recognized. It’s not about selling, it’s about giving people something they will enjoy and interact with. Diesel were the first brand to advertise their clothes through video games, normally they would Promote products mainly online, www.diesel.com and in high-end magazines such as: Elle Vogue Diesel also advertise through billboards which catch a lot of attention OTHER WAYS OF ADVERTISING ARE THROUGH MAGAZINES ADS SUCH AS BAZAAR Celebrity endorsement and sponsorship L’Oreal and Diesel launched Fuel for Life (for him and for her) in the fall of 2007. A mini-collection for Adidas was launched in 2008 called Adidas Originals Denim by Diesel. The underwear license is held by the US company Mast Industries Inc.,who also make lingerie for Victoria’s Secret. A new collaboration with AGV has seen the launch of a Helmet. Recently Diesel Home, thanks to collaborations with Moroso and Foscarini has been launched in the market. The Diesel company has acquired stakes in the brands Viktor & Rolf, Maison Martin Margiela and DSquared2. In recent years, the company has driven its attention to endorsing young creativity by sponsoring several projects such as the Diesel-U-Music Contest. Diesel has been the founding partner of International Talent Support in its various forms. Diesel has also offered sponsorship and creative contribution to the 2006 edition of Vienna’s Life Ball AIDS charity, as well as the Sundance Film Festival. In December 2008, Diesel announced a marketing partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, to sell their designs in Sony’s virtual world, Playstation Home with the majority of the proceeds going to the OTBF Only The Brave Foundation (Diesel’s charitable arm). Conclusion Here are some of the main points learned from researching the marketing mix for Diesel Brand: * By addressing the 4Ps of the marketing mix Diesel has been able to establish a new product range, choose the most effective approach to price, place it so that it is easily accessible and promote the range to customers. * Diesel is a global household name for premium clothing but it all started from one man wanting to do something unusual, something ‘stupid’. This has created a lifestyle – a whole new way to see a  brand. * By comprising an area on price in comparison I have found that other well known brands are offering the same quality jeans at cheaper prices * By looking at th Diesel brand product life cycle, it was hard to find a product of theres that did not work, and was in thee decline stage of the cycle. * Diesel have been very successful in their collaborations with loreal and also Adidas * There continues to be huge interest in the diesel brand and it doesn’t loke like that would change anytime soon. Recommendations Diesel seem to be doing a lot right with the company as you can see with the continuing profits in their sales, however I could still recommend a few points: * Diesel could look at lowering their prices a small fraction as there is a lot of competition out there from the likes of Levis, Seven for all mankind, Tommy Hilfiger etc. * They could look at different ways of distribution to lower costs * They could do more collaboration with other big name brands because they have worked well in the past. * Diesel could also look into choosing different communication channels again to lower costs in advertising especially as From January to September 2008, Diesel spent $5.8 million on U.S. advertising, according to TNS Media Intelligence Bibliography www.diesel.com www.wikipedia.com www.thetimes.co.uk http://businesscasestudies.co.uk/diesel/live-breathe-and-wear-passion/conclusion.html www.thetimes100.co.uk/downloads/_15_summary.pdf www.marketingmagazine.co.uk/news/54124/ www.freewebs.com/busecon/_15_full.pdf en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_(brand) aesessex.regulus.titaninternet.co.uk/†¦/KS4_Applied_Diesel_marketin www.peachtreeridge.org/pages/ybell/_15_lp14.pd www.managementparadise.com class notes

In the earth, the earth thou shalt be laid and answer the following questions

(a) What different arguments are presented through the poems two voices? (b) How do the poems language and structure contribute to its meaning? (c) Write about another of Brontà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½'s poems that has a death or a farewell as its subject matter, making some comparisons with the poem above. (a) In this poem â€Å"In the earth, the earth thou shalt be laid †¦Ã¢â‚¬ two adverse voices dispute the nature of death. The first warns of the grim finality and isolation of death. The second voice welcomes death as the bringer of peace after a life of troubles, and opposes the argument of oblivion with the prospect of posthumous kind remembrance. The first voice returns in the last two stanzas insisting that death brings complete annihilation and observes that the first speaker will be mourned by only one faithful individual. In the very first stanza, the first voice presents the second with the image of his grave: the laying of his body, the tombstone and the enfolding soil. The first voice talks of death as very final. It talks about the revoltingness of decomposition; warning of death's defiling bed: â€Å"Black mould beneath thee spread And black mould to cover thee†. The second voice welcomes the prospect of death. In stanza two, the second voice interrupts, creating a more sanguine tone. The voice seems to resign of death in â€Å"Well, there is rest there†, and the welcoming of death is expressed in the second line. The images this voice uses are by no means morbid. The second voice makes the argument that life is not restful and death is a time of great tranquillity and peace. It suggests death is a time when you and the environment come together as one. The twining of â€Å"sunny hair† with â€Å"grass-roots† suggests the intricate weaving of one life-from with another. The burial of fair hair takes down an implication of sunlight into the underlying darkness. The first voice returns in stanza three. This voice objects that â€Å"the rest† which the second voice looks forward to is only the chill rest of nothingness: â€Å"But cold, cold is that resting place Shut out from Joy and Liberty† There is no happiness of freedom in the oblivion and enclosure of the tomb. The first voice talks of the cold of the grave and that it is a place without any happiness or pleasure. It then counters the more positive attitude towards death of the second voice by expressing the fear and revulsion felt by the living towards the decaying of dead bodies and, therefore, the dead themselves: â€Å"And all who loved thy living face Shall shrink from its gloom and thee† The second's voice gives an emphatic rejection to the first's ideas. It suggests that, far from cold being the characteristic of death, it characterises the falsehood of the world and human relationships: â€Å"Not so, here the world is chill And sworn friends fall from me† This voice is very bitter about rejection. However, the rhythm the tone then lightens: â€Å"But there, they'll own me still And prize my memory† In death, he will be remembered and his worth recognised. He believes that his old friends from life will think of him fondly even if they were indifferent to him when alive. The first voice concludes the poems in the last two stanzas. In stanza five he seems almost contemptuous: â€Å"Farewell, then, all that love All that deep sympathy:† It is almost as if the first voice is dismissing the second as dead already. The nothingness of death is affirmed in a declaration of the indifference of heaven to human fate that is matched only by the indifference of the living: â€Å"Sleep on, heaven laughs above – Earth never misses thee -† In the final stanza the voice returns to the image of the grave with which the poem began, observing that the tomb irrevocably severs human relations. The last two lines are ambiguous, but seem to imply that there is, however, one person who mourns, one who was always faithful: â€Å"One heat broke, only† In conclusion, the two voices propose two completely different arguments into the nature of death. The first voice thinks of the physicality of being dead, and sees it as a time of cold and revulsion. The second voice thinks more of the state of being dead, perceiving death as a release from the troubles of life and enjoys the thought of people looking back fondly on his memory. (b) This poem, â€Å"In the earth, the earth† structure and language contribute a lot to the meaning of the poem. The six quatrains of this elegy are based on an iambic trimester and tetrameter, but with at least one substitution in most of the lines. In particular, the frequent substitution of a spondee in the first foot of each line helps to create the stately solemn tone that suits the subject. In the first stanza, the first voice presents the second with the image of his grace: the laying of the body, the tombstone and the enfolding soil. Key words in this image are emphasised by means of repetition, alliteration and word order. Thus the repetition of â€Å"the earth† in the first half of line 1 contributes to the setting of the melancholy, fatalistic tone. Alliteration in line 2 in â€Å"stone standing† builds on this. The repetition of â€Å"black mould† in lines 3 and 4 has a similar effect, but here the mould not only refers to the soil, but to the decay of the human body itself within the earth. â€Å"Black† likewise refers not only to the colour of the soul, but traditionally, in such a context, signifies death and mourning. But the whole elegiac effect is largely achieved by the word order that creates the heavily spondaic rhythm. In stanza 2, the second voice shows resignation in the â€Å"Well, there is rest there†, and the welcoming of death expressed in the second line. Moreover, in contrast with the image of death in the first stanza of â€Å"black earth† the image in lines 3 and 4 is by no means morbid; the â€Å"sunny hair† recalls life which is nurtured by sun, and the grass-roots refer to the means of life in the soil. Thus the whole curious effect is the image of weaving them together of two forms of life. The rhythm is highly irregular, for example with the substitution of two dactyls. Again this is an important factor in achieving the different tone of the second voice. The only spondee in this stanza falls appropriately on â€Å"grass roots†. The first voice returns in stanza three. The repetition of â€Å"But cold, cold† echoes the opening of stanza 1 (â€Å"In the earth, the earth†), and recaptures the contrasting tone. The voice objects that â€Å"the rest† which the second voice looks forward to is only the chill rest of nothingness: â€Å"But cold, cold is that resting place Shut out from Joy and Liberty† There is no happiness or freedom in the oblivion and enclosure of the tomb. It then counters the more positive attitude towards death of the second voice by expressing the fear and revulsion left by the living towards the evidence of decay (the grave, â€Å"that resting place†) and by extension towards the dead themselves: â€Å"And all who loved thy living face Shall shrink from its gloom and thee† Alliteration in â€Å"all†, â€Å"loved†, â€Å"living† and â€Å"Shall shrink† lend fluency to these lines, whose rhythm is more regular than the second stanza, thus giving this voice a more matter-of-fact tone and saving it from melodrama. In stanza four, the second voice's emphatic rejection of the first is signalled by the opening negative â€Å"Not so†, and by the italicised antithesis of â€Å"here† and â€Å"there† around which the stanza is built. The voice suggests that far from cold being the characteristic of death, it characterises the falsehood of the world and human relationships: â€Å"Nor so, here the world is chill And sworn friends fall from me† Assonance and alliteration (â€Å"friends fall from†) bind these lines and assist the emphasis. The rhythm also greatly contributes to this. The second foot of line 1 is a trochee, giving the italicised â€Å"here† appropriate stress. In line 2 three consecutive stressed syllables (â€Å"sworn friends fall†) reinforce the bitterness of the reflection. But in the contrasting lines 3 and 4 the rhythm lightens into regular iambs: â€Å"But there they'll own me still And prize my memory† The italicised â€Å"there† falls naturally on the stressed syllable of a regular iambic tetrameter. In death, he will be remembered and his worth recognised. The first voice concludes the poem in these final two stanzas. Again the characteristic of the voice is repetition. In stanza 5 the tone appears almost contemptuous: â€Å"Farewell, then, all that love All that deep sympathy:† It is almost as if the first voice dismisses the second as dead already. The last two lines are ambiguous, but seem to imply that there is, however, one person who mourns, one who was always faithful. Repetition and italicisation (â€Å"One heart†¦That Heart†) and the spondees falling at the beginning of lines give the ending of the poem a heightened dramatic tone. (c) Another of Brontà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½'s poems that has a death or a farewell as the subject matter is â€Å"Remembrance†. Like â€Å"In the earth, the earth† this poem is an elegy: the speaker in the poem reflects on the loss of the beloved. It consists of eight quatrains, whereas â€Å"In the earth† has only six, but like the above poem it is rhymed abab. This poem is written in the first person. There is only one voice in this poem. The poet appears to be contemplating the cold and isolated grave of her beloved and look back over the fifteen years since his death. The idea of the grave as â€Å"cold† and lonely reflects the ideas of the first voice in â€Å"In the earth†. The poet asks the lovers forgiveness for having forgotten him â€Å"While the world's tide is bearing me along†. But preoccupation with worldly matters has never distorted her love of him; she has loved none other. This sentiment of one person who faithfully mourns after death reflects the poem â€Å"In the earth† in the lines: â€Å"On heart broke only, there That heart was worthy thee! -† The poet then goes on to say how after a period of utter despair she deliberately turned away from grieving for him, learning to continue her existence even while recognising that she had no hope of future happiness. In the last stanza she acknowledges the fragility of her efforts at stoical acceptance. She dare not let her thoughts dwell upon him for fear that life would thereafter be unendurable. Like the first voice of the poem discussed earlier, this poem has a very slow rhythm and an intensely sorrowful tone. Also like the other poem, repetition of key words such as â€Å"far†, â€Å"cold† and â€Å"severed† enforce their points. The imagery of snow and distant, wild landscapes conveys a bleak, chill atmosphere. Brontà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ also uses assonance in both poems, here on the different ‘o' sounds in stanza two, building the atmosphere of sorrowful retrospection: â€Å"Now, when alone, do my thoughts no longer hover Over the mountains on that northern shore †¦Ã¢â‚¬ Another similar effect Brontà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ uses in both poems in repeating the opening of the poem. In â€Å"In the Earth†, she uses repetition to reflect the opening and also returns to imagery of the cold, isolated grave. In this poem, the first half of stanza three repeats the actual opening of the poem â€Å"Cold in the earth†. Ironically, this echoes the two uses of repetition used in the earlier poem: â€Å"In the earth, the earth† and â€Å"But cold, cold†. Also, this poem talks about two completely different feelings towards the death of her lover, just as the two voices in â€Å"In the earth† compare two completely different views towards death itself.

Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Essays

Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Essays Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Paper Summary of WeVe Got Mail Always Paper Email has become so entrenched in our lives that it has become the common mode of communication in the workplace, and for some, it has become a lifeline to the world as well. Many of us can hardly imagine life without it. That email enhances as well as complicates our daily business is a given. In Weve Got Mail- Always, Andrew Leonard discusses how email saves time and wastes it, makes life simpler and more complicated, brings us together and pushes us apart. (240-243) E-mail, cant live with it, cant live without it. Con artists and real artists, advertisers and freedom fighters, lovers and sworn enemiestheyve all flocked to e-mail as they would to any new medium of expression. E-mail is convenient, saves time, brings us closer to one another, helps us manage our ever-more-complex lives. Books are written, campaigns conducted, crimes committedall via e-mail. But it is also inconvenient, wastes our time, isolates us in front of our computers and introduces more complexity into our already too-harried lives. To skeptics, e-mail is just the latest chapter in the evolving history of human communication. A snooping husband now discovers his wifes affair by reading her private e-mailbut he could have uncovered the same sin by finding letters a generation ago. Yet e-mailand all online communicationis in fact something truly different; it captures the essence of life at the close of the 20th century with an authority that few other products of digital technology can claim. Does the pace of life seem ever faster? E-mail simultaneously allows us to cope with that acceleration and contributes to it. Are our attention spans shriveling under barrages of new, improved forms of stimulation? The quick and dirty e-mail is made to order for those whose ability to concentrate is measured in nanoseconds. If we accept that the creation of the globe-spanning Internet is one of the most important technological innovations of the last half of this century, then we must give e-mailthe living embodiment of human connection across the Netpride of place. The way we interact with each other is changing; e-mail is both the catalyst and the instrument of that change.

Walt Disney Company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Walt Disney Company - Essay Example In general the team had pretty good track record of delivering the assigned tasks on time with exception of some minor incidents. The team had strengths and weaknesses that affected the performance of the group. One of the strengths of the team was that it did not waste any time in choosing a topic for the project. This enabled the team to quickly start working on the topic. Another strength of the team was its communication process. The team often utilized emails to communicate with each other. The use of emails was very effective because it allowed the members of the team to exchange information instantly. The members of the team communicated well during meetings. The organization of the team was also very good. Everybody was assigned their own part so we would not have any incidents. The teammate that worked the hardest in the team was Jay. He did more work because every one emailed their part to him and he had to connect and correct all of them before making the final paper. He d eserves a lot of credit for his tremendous work efforts. The weaknesses of the team can be best described by evaluating the work behavior of the members. Shane did a pretty good job, but one time he submitted his part late. Despite his mistake the team was not hurt. The weakest link on the team was Alana. Alana was a problematic teammate that often acted unprofessionally with her antics. Alana contributed fairly to the topic, but it seemed like she always choose the easy part to do. My assessment of Alana is that sometimes she did not take the work seriously. She often laughed at all times about any topic whether it was good or bad. She did not seem to realize that her antics were annoying to the group. She also had the bad habit of nail biting. Another thing is she acted like a child when she kept knocking her pen on the table nonstop during the class and group meeting time. My role in the group was to bring up ideas and make some suggestions at the time we choose topic. I also sub mitted my work on time despite the fact that I had a hard time due to personal problems. I had to come back to my country due to an emergency to resolve a problem. If the team had to work together again next semester I would make changes by establishing ground rules to follow during the team’s initial meeting. I would also increase the amount of meetings during the project to improve the planning and the communication process. The team achieved a coordinated effort. This was accomplished by meeting regularly and by each member being accountable for their actions. The leadership function of the team was not clearly defined, but the team member that showed the most leadership was Jay. I also informally provided leadership to my team by leading through example. I always supported my teammates during the project. I helped my teammates by giving them ideas on how to proceed with their assigned tasks. I was able to build a sense of trust with most of my teammates except with Alana. Her childish behavior made me think she would be an irresponsible teammate. In the end she actually delivered her assigned tasks and performed a fair job. Since leadership roles were not clearly defined by the team I can honesty say that the team exercise did not help me that much in building my leadership abilities. I did not feel compromised by the team because the work was evenly distributed. The team did not experience any major conflicts that would have compromised the project deliverables. The tasks performed by the group were
